PROJECT OVERVIEW

The Old Stone Bridge was built in 1907 and carried RI 138 over the Sakonnet River between Portsmouth and Tiverton. The bridge was severely damaged by Hurricane Carol in 1954. It was later replaced in 1956 by the Sakonnet River Bridge. All that remained in 2018 were remnants of the West approach located in Portsmouth and the East approach located in Tiverton. Both approaches were being used as makeshift fishing piers. At the request of the Town of Tiverton, the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) issued a grant for the rehabilitation of the remaining structure into a waterfront park and fishing pier.
